So a comment on another post this morning got me thinking. I started writing a book while commenting back, and then I thought I might as well just make a new post with those thoughts. So here it goes.
My friends in the real world often laugh and say I'm the most blunt person they've ever met. Sometimes it gets me in trouble. Sometimes it fosters valuable discussions that otherwise would not have happened. I guess my real-world attitude carries over to my bloggin' self.
I realized a while back that my blog is pretty negative sometimes. I tried to fight against it for a couple weeks ... But then I thought, you know, none of the other blogs I read are doing this. Some other blogs point out and comment on excellent examples of multimedia. I like reading them, and sometimes I also comment on excellent work. It's inspirational and educational to check out pieces that are done well.
But it's equally educational to study things that are done badly. I learn much better, and quicker, from my mistakes then I do from my successes. Isn't it worthwhile that we can also learn from the mistakes of others?

For the record, I actually fear your critique of my video/multimedia work, but reading your criticism of others makes your voice, or, uh, text, pop up in my head while I'm shooting.
Little things like, "Shouldn't you have brought the tripod with you?"
And "Stop zooming right now."
And "Maybe it's time to try out a microphone, eh?"
Ryan, nice beard!!
Looks like you have a FAN in your comments section too:
"I like the dude! Very Santa Cruz! Casual, kinda down home, and looks like he’s from the Cruz!
Your local hometown reporter dude!"
I liked your elephant seals slideshow, but the audio was peaking a bit. I know you didn't do that part.
But seriously, I'm glad that my bitter ramblings can help someone a bit at least.
Funny that before I even read this post, I was thinking to myself about how you dare to be negative. Personally, I think that's a positive. :)
"You'll never become an A List videoblogger with this kind of criticism" my butt. It's one of the reasons I keep coming back to read your blog.
I'm going to challenge myself to do more of it, too. Because I agree, we have to look at what didn't work in addition to what did to learn and become better.
I just set the levels on the R09 and hand it to the reporter or photographer, then amplify and normalize in Audacity best I can.
And, yeah, my fan might be, er, internal. Anyone fooled into thinking I'm a native Cruzan will be sorely disappointed as soon as I get a haircut.
ok, but how about some links to your work so we can see how much weight to give your 'feedback' I think it's important for people who give 'feedback' to have the 'chops' to back it up. cuz anyone can 'talk' but can you DO?

Melissa--Thanks!
Richard--I actually post links to all of my work ... I'd invite you to look through my archives and find some.
I admire your work, although both of us know I've criticized it before, and I'd love to have your feedback. I figure if I can dish it out, I better be able to take it too.
You can be mean about it if you want (I'm big enough to take it), but the truth is you don't have to. I'm willing to have civilized discussions about the mistakes I make. I'm the first to admit that I have made them, and I know I'll make them in the future.
Admitting mistakes, learning from them, and changing will allow me to get better.
help me out, i REALLY want to see your work, post a few links to your favs, please........i'm not loking to be mean and never felt you were mean to anybody. i admire your candor. i also like these kinds of discussions. i choose to create multimediashooter to help--tutorials--and to point folks to work that others are doing, i don't want it t become a place where i go to hang my dirty laundry, but i'd love to come here and hang it, if your willing, you bitter old goat! just kidding. here's a link to my latest project

i did EVERYTHING, the flash, the video, and even my first 'info graphic' i tried to pull out all the stops in the four small video pieces i did. i wanted to try for myself, narration, mixed with ambinet and interviews. you can tell with a none visual concept story like this it is hard to always SHOW so i had to do a fair amount of TELLING, but i hope i didn't do it in such a boring way. let me know what you think. i hpe that laundry wasn't too stinky!
take care,

Please feel free to come talk trash on my blog whenever you feel like it!
Also, if you disagree with my critique on anything I post, come and argue with me! That offer extends to ANYBODY who reads this blog. I like to argue because it forces me to more thoroughly examine my own thoughts; and the arguments of others force me to consider things that I may not have thought about otherwise.
I'll post a couple links today and I really do invite your honest critique.
